Wesleyan University offers several opportunities for individuals to enroll in undergraduate courses on a nondegree basis. Enrollment in all nondegree programs is based on available space after degree-seeking students have enrolled, and, in some categories, requires instructor approval. 

Nondegree Study Categories

Auditors 

Auditors are nondegree students who participate in an undergraduate course, but do not earn credit and receive no transcript. 

• Eligibility: Wesleyan alumni and members of the broader community may audit undergraduate courses with the instructor’s permission and if space allows.

• Auditors must register their contact information with the Office of the Registrar.

• The terms of participation must be mutually agreed upon in advance with the instructor. Auditors will not participate in tests or examinations, or submit papers or any work for grading unless the instructor specifically allows it.

• Auditors do not pay tuition.

Community Scholars

Community Scholars are nondegree students who enroll in an undergraduate course for credit and receive a transcript.

• Application: An application must be submitted and approved. Admissions are handled by Continuing Studies; international student applications are reviewed by the director of the Office of Study Abroad. 

• Admission Status: Admission as a nondegree student does not constitute admission to Wesleyan University degree programs. Nondegree students who wish to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree must apply separately through the Office of Admission and those who wish to pursue a Bachelor of Liberal Studies degree must apply separately through Continuing Studies. Applications are evaluated according to the standard admission criteria for those programs, and nondegree students who become admitted to degree candidacy will be expected to satisfy normal degree requirements. 

• Community scholars may enroll in up to four courses per semester (fall and spring) with instructor approval, subject to space availability. They may also enroll in Summer Session and Winter Session courses.

• Tuition for courses during the fall or spring term is a per-credit charge, based on Wesleyan’s full-time tuition. Tuition for Summer and Winter Session is the posted per-credit tuition for the session. 

• Housing and financial aid are not available. 

• Current high school students can apply to take courses during Summer Session or Winter Session. For fall or spring term enrollment, current high school students must apply through the High School Scholars program. 

High School Scholars

Through the High School Scholars program, outstanding local high school juniors and seniors may apply to take one course per semester tuition-free (program runs only during fall and spring terms). 

• Applications are submitted through the high school guidance counselor to the Office of Admission.

• Acceptance in a course is subject to instructor approval.

Note that current high school students may apply to take a Summer Session or Winter Session course for credit as Community Scholars (normal Summer Session or Winter Session tuition required).
