Enrollment and Attendance

Enrollment

Students must complete all steps to be fully matriculated and comply with all enrollment deadlines each semester, as set by the Registrar. Failure to enroll by the announced deadline results in administrative withdrawal.

Adding/Dropping and Withdrawing from Courses

  • Adding Courses: Students may not add courses after the drop/add period, except for courses beginning later in the semester, as long as the course is added within 5 days after the start of the course.

  • After the Drop/Add Period Ends: Withdrawals result in a “W” on the transcript.

  • Deadlines to Withdraw from a course by choice and without penalty (with a “W” and no grade) are as follows:

    • Full-semester and second- and fourth-quarter courses: one week before the end of classes for the relevant full semester.

    • First- and third-quarter courses: one week before the end of the corresponding quarter.

  • Late Withdrawals: For a student who withdraws after the stated withdrawal deadline, the courses will remain on the transcript and will be graded accordingly.

  • An instructor may require a student to withdraw from a course for failure to meet enrollment conditions. The student will be required to submit the withdrawal request to make the withdrawal official.

  • Students who withdraw from the University before the stated withdrawal deadline will also be withdrawn from their courses.

Class Attendance

  • Wesleyan does not have a specific University-wide attendance policy, though regular attendance in classes is expected, and absences should be exceptions, not the rule.

  • Instructors may establish and enforce specific attendance rules for their courses. Any student who is repeatedly absent without excuse from scheduled academic exercises at which attendance is mandatory may be required to withdraw from the course.

  • Students on strict probation must attend all classes in which they are enrolled.

Repeatable and Retaken Courses

Designated repeatable courses may be taken twice for a letter grade. See Graduation Requirements for the limit on credit toward the degree.

Students who receive a C– or below in a non-repeatable course may retake it once. Both grades appear on the transcript and count toward the GPA, but only one counts toward graduation and general education requirements.

Courses failed with a grade below D– may be added during pre-registration or drop/add. For grades between C– and D– (inclusive), students may submit an enrollment request only during the drop/add period; the registrar will flag the enrollment request to indicate that the course is being repeated due to a low grade.

Auditing Fall and Spring Undergraduate Courses

Subject to any conditions set by the instructor, registered Wesleyan BA students may audit courses, with instructor permission and at no charge. The instructor may add to the grade roster the name of any student who has attended with sufficient regularity to have the course listed in the academic record as audited, without credit. Auditors will not participate in tests or examinations, or submit papers or any work for grading unless the instructor specifically allows it.

Wesleyan alumni and members of the community may audit courses subject to the regulations for Nondegree Undergraduate Students.
