Class Scheduling 

Undergraduate fall and spring classes are scheduled in the following standard patterns:

• Three 50-minute periods per week (M/W/F) 

  • Morning meetings: 8:50 AM, 9:50 AM, or 10:50 AM.

  • Afternoon meetings: 1:20 PM or 2:50 PM.

• Two 80-minute periods each week (T/TH)

  • Morning meetings: 8:50 AM or 10:20 AM.

  • Afternoon meetings: 1:20 PM or 2:50 PM.

  • Evening meetings: 7:10 PM - 8:30 PM.

• Two 80-minute periods each week (M/W)

  • Morning meetings: 8:50 AM or 10:50 AM.

  • Afternoon meetings: 1:20 PM or 2:50 PM.

  • Evening meetings: 7:10 PM - 8:30 PM.

• Two 80-minute periods each week (M/F or W/F)

  • Morning meetings: 8:50 AM or 10:50 AM.

  • Afternoon meetings: 1:20 PM or 2:50 PM.

• One class period each week, meeting in the afternoon or evening on any day

  • Afternoon meetings: 1:20 PM - 4:10 PM (M, T, W, R, or F).

  • Evening meetings: 7:10 PM - 10:00 PM (M, T, W, or R).

All classes and laboratory sessions should be scheduled between 8:00 AM and 4:10 PM and in the evenings to begin at 7:10 PM.

Saturday classes may be scheduled as desired by departments.

Exceptions to these meeting patterns require approval by the divisional dean. Ordinarily, classes should not overlap more than one standard period between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. 

Additional required class activities must be announced before preregistration, or at the first class meeting. Any later-added component must offer alternatives for students with academic or athletic conflicts.

Summer and Winter Sessions have immersion schedules with more frequent class meetings each week.

Reading Period

This period is designated for students to prepare for examinations and complete assignments due at the end of the semester. To protect the integrity of that period, the faculty have established that no required assignments, classes, or mandatory activities should occur during Reading Period, except for oral or written exams governed by alternative exam calendars. Significant assignments in courses without registrar-scheduled exams should be due during the official exam period.

Final Examinations

Final exam schedules are announced in advance. Any changes must be unanimously agreed on by the class and approved by the instructor, and must remain within the formal exam period and reported promptly to the registrar. In-class final exams are limited to the official class meeting period and final exams to three hours unless otherwise announced before the exam. Students with three or more exams in one day or four in two days may request a rescheduling of one exam in consultation with the class dean.
